Did you know Deptford X is London’s longest running contemporary visual arts festival? Founded in 1998, it’s been going nearly two decades.

With such an impressive legacy there’s a new concept for 2016. Five emerging contemporary artists, selected from a shortlist by a panel of curators, critics and gallerists, have been commissioned to create new and ambitious site-specific works across Deptford.

Locations will include the Crypt at St Nicholas’ Church (for Joey Holder, see above), Norfolk House (for Takeshi Shiomitsu) and Deptford X Gallery (Berry Patten).

The aim of this new core programme is to offer support to young artists with potential at an often overlooked stage of their early careers. Makes sense to us.

There’s also – as ever – an event-packed festival fringe to underline the diverse art in the local community. It’s totally unregulated and an assortment of artists across the area will once again display work in shop windows, libraries, roundabouts, public walls, railway arches, and pubs.

The launch party is tonight at Wanderlust (30 Deptford Church St), 6-8pm. Deptford X runs until October 2nd. For the full programme and event details head here
