Pinboard 30 August: Peckham gets a fashion line, art battles rage and a Stockwell chef goes big up north

Peckham-born fashion designer and name-to-watch, Kit Neale, is to launch a clothing range inspired by SE15. The designer, whose 2014 Spring/Summer collection is called Peckham Riviera, cites Rye Lane and the local chicken shops as influences on the colourful collection. On going out in the area, Neale told Dazed Digital this week: “Well everyone knows Frank’s but I think for me it’s about actually observing the characters on Rye Lane. As for particular bars and things, there’s nothing to scream and shout about, there’s nothing you wouldn’t find anywhere else in London, it’s all about the atmosphere of being on Rye Lane.” He also said one of his favourite local artists is also one of our recent favourites – the man behind the House of Dreams.

In July, a temporary shop opened on East Street SE17, run by a varied collective of young entrepreneurs and creatives. At the shop, they have hosted pop-up markets, workshops, street theatre, photography and art exhibitions and much more – all part of a six-week, nationwide campaign by youth organisation somewhere_to, which aimed to inject fresh talent into British high streets. But tonight it closes its doors for the last time – not without a bit of a party though. For an evening of debate, art battles, music and cake, pop down between 6pm-9pm ce soir.

The Canton Arms in Stockwell is consistently up there in lists of London’s top foodie pubs. And as such, it’s no surprise to learn that one of its former shining kitchen stars has flown the nest, set up his own gig, and hopes to turn a recently revamped boozer north of the river into another foodie destination.

Calling himself The Fat Butcher, chef Matthew Dee (nephew of Jack Dee) has hopped across the river to NW5’s The Grafton Pub, where he’s serving the sort of food his erstwhile Canton Arms regulars may recognise: rabbit lollipops, brown crab, salt hake and rib of beef priced by weight. It opened yesterday and you’ve only got until Monday to catch this group exhibition WhereHouse, a collaboration between ten artists and in support of homeless charity Crisis. The works on show span several mediums: drawing, painting, photography, installation and sculpture and, say the organisers, “are designed to provoke”.

This temporary new gallery opened last week and is in situ until October. The gallery plans to host two exhibitions, between them showing 14 artists’ work across a diverse range of media, techniques and processes.
