Pinboard: The Stone Roses come to south London, free food for a decade and arts under the arches

Meet your neighbours for an inspiring lunch in the park

Brixton People's KitchenWhat are you doing this Sunday? Fancy taking part in a big neighbourly lunch in the park? That’s just what the inspiring people behind the Brixton People’s Kitchen, whose mission is to banish local food waste, are hosting this Sunday, 28 April, at Myatt’s Field Park.

The team have been busy the last couple of weeks at the Remakery, designing and building themselves a marvellous-looking kitchen-on-wheels. They’ll be spinning the specially adapted bicycle around south London all summer long, but the park lunch is its big unveiling. It’s also – of course, a good excuse to get stuffed, Brixton People’s Kitchen style, which means delicious dishes made from food that’s going spare. The precise menu remains a mystery (even to the cooks) as it will take shape according to what sort of food is donated. “Any fruits, vegetables, dried and canned foods that you don’t quite know what to do with, bring them down!” say the organisers. Drop-off is between 11am and 12pm on the day. And if you just want to eat – simply turn up at the communal table between 3pm and 6pm. Food will be served on a donations basis – and bring a doggy bag to take home leftovers!

Find Myatt’s Field Park on Cormont Road, SE5. And anyone keen to volunteer as a cook, or to help with the food collection, should contact Camilla on 07884 418 319 or by emailing volunteerwithbrixtonpk@gmail.com

Next: Art to the max

  1. the four-piece, which imploded with animosity after just two albums,
changed the course of musical history by tapping into ecstasy-fuelled
club dancefloors with guitar-heavy tunes (hard, now, to imagine a time
when this would be considered as radical as it was).
