The Deep South hits south London at the Mister Biggs Supper Club

You can hear Ashley Givens’ syrupy Alabama drawl at 100 paces – and just like her accent, her cooking is big and bold.

It’s also like nothing else you can eat anywhere else in Brixton… unless you book yourselves a seat at the debut supper club she’s co-hosting with Sean O’Sullivan, who runs local barnet trimmer’s, Tidy Hair, and friend Liam Cohen, an art director at the Sunday Times. Between them, they will make sure the venue, ‘Mister Biggs’, a currently empty shop on Atlantic Road, SW9, looks beautiful.

The BYO, Cajun-themed evening, £35 a ticket, features a welcome cocktail, a three-course meal, and a DJ playing New Orleans jazz and blues until 1am. Classic southern dishes will include Ashley’s grandma’s spicy sausage Jambalaya recipe, or her “special spices” sticky bean stew for vegetarians, plus crisp, salty fried okra and other hearty sides served “family style” – meaning you help yourselves at your table. Among the trio of deserts will be Ashley’s dangerously delicious pecan pie (or, in Alabaman, “piquaan pah”). Go hungry, those portions are gonna be huge.

Tickets for this one are almost gone, but she’s promised to put on another if there’s enough interest. Drop her a line at ashley.givens@gmail.com
