Crêpes made by Brazilians may seem a little unorthodox. But since 2010 Senzala, housed in The Brick Box, deep among Brixton Market’s African prints, secondhand boutiques and pig’s heads, have been elevating France’s traditional take-away snack rather well, while keeping prices reasonable.
All of which equals a popular place, so you may have to fight for a table whether inside among the art or outside among the young and the reckless. Spoilt for choice we chose to share, first a crispy galette, the gluten-free, buckwheat pancake, stuffed with a classic combo of creamy goat’s cheese, sweet caramelised onion and bitter rocket, then one brimming with crispy bacon, sticky with maple syrup. But some like it hot, and The Godfather – bursting with jalapenos and melted cheese, spiked with lip-tingly pepperoni –was the winner.
Included in the menu is a selection of tapas, untried this time but ideal to snack on while nursing a hangover with a cut price Caipirinha; happy hour is 4pm-8pm, when cocktails are £4.50.
Bananas feature strongly among the sweet crepes, but desperate for a taste of summer we couldn’t resist one that was stuffed with strawberries and melted dark and white Belgium chocolate, topped with vanilla ice-cream. Mmmm.
