Pinboard: south London as art, film for free and sexy riverside housing

2. Free cinema in Camberwell (in lovely locations!)

Camberwell station

William Booth College Salvation ArmyCamberwell dwellers are already mid-way through the very excellent idea that is the Free Film Festival. The series of screenings, in different venues all around the neighbourhood and run entirely by local volunteers, kicked off last Thursday – and runs until 24 March. And this weekend you’re in for a real treat with the festival’s flagship venue: the Salvation Army William Booth College (right) is that imposing building right by Denmark Hill Station that you might have passed many times, wondering what it’s like inside.

This Saturday, you can find out – as there are two screenings happening inside this landmark piece of architecture in the building’s stunning 400-seater Assembly Hall. On Saturday afternoon there is London Transport Through the Ages; a series of documentaries charting travel in the city from the 1920s to the 1980s. There’s cake too! On Sunday, you can catch a matinee of The Wizard of Oz.

But there are screenings of other films elsewhere every day, including Withnail and I, Best in Show and Hairspray – all being shown in venues as varied as the Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, the Whirled Cinema and the Flying Dutchman pub.

And if Camberwell isn’t your patch, the summer-long Festival shortly is coming soon to New Cross, Deptford, Herne Hill, Peckham and Nunhead. Watch this space for updates.
