Pinboard: lazy Pompeii, wrestling in Southwark and sexy food

5. Check out Southwark Playhouse’s new Elephant and Castle home

Tanzi Libre at Southwark PlayhouseSouthwark Playhouse this week announced the first two plays to be performed at the theatre’s brand new temporary premises, in converted office and warehouse space at Elephant and Castle. And we like the sound of Tanzi Libre, on in the theatre’s 240-seater main space, named The Large. Originally written in 1980 by Claire Luckham, it has been revived in association with Lucha Britannia and The London School of Lucha Libre, and under the direction of Southwark’s former artistic director, Ellie Jones.

Originally titled Trafford Tanzi, Luckham’s play is set in a south London wrestling ring where our hero, Tanzi, is pitted against her lover, Dean Rebel, in what gets hyped as the “fight of the decade”. The show promises to be a lively event, with a live DJ and singing wrestlers performing. Book now to get tickets for the run, which begins on 15 May through to 22 June.

Tickets start at £10 but 1000 lucky Southwark residents will be able to see the play for free, in a local scheme allowing two tickets per household to locals.

The theatre remains in its new location while London Bridge, where it usually lives, is redeveloped – it is not expected to return until 2018 when the work is completed.
