6. Clapham North: Affordable gourmet at Jimmy’s Underground
We have yet to try it out, but are intrigued with the news of Jimmy’s Underground, a summer-only restaurant that’s set up shop beneath D’Vine Wines at 74 Landor Road, SW4.
It’s got a rather swishy, corporate sheen – the team behind it are JGarcia Catering, expert channellers of the fashion for temporary restaurants (the Evening Standard has dubbed the eponymous Jimmy Garcia “London’s pop-up master”. Make of that what you will). But the food sounds bloody lovely – and it isn’t over-priced.
Open for long weekends only, Jimmy’s has three themes: Thursdays are Burgers and Bordeaux nights when, for £25, you get half a bottle of Bordeaux wine, and the choice of a duck, lobster or beef burger, followed by home-made ice-creams. Saturdays are all about ethically-sourced everything – with regularly-changing dishes ranging from wild Herefordshire venison carpaccio to caramelised red onion, beetroot, pear and goats cheese crumble with truffle oil and chocolate and Basil Milk Shake, while Sundays are for 12-hour cooked roasts, live acoustic tunes but a £15 price tag.
