Greenwich: Meantime Old Brewery hosts a weekend-long party
Once upon a time, not long ago at all, the idea of beer and ale appreciation conjured images of bearded chaps of a certain age exuding disdain for big brand lager drinkers. And a beer festival? A pretty niche day out… How things have changed. The pastime is way friendlier these days thanks, in part, to the growth of the American movement, plus the popularity of bars specialising in the stuff. Locally, Borough Market’s The Rake, Brixton’s Craft Beer Company and Crown & Anchor, various Draft Houses and The Priory Arms in Stockwell are all geek-light environments that have helped to move things along.
So whether you’re a serious craft beer nerd, or just a casual fancier, it’s nice to know that Greenwich is home to an award-winning, indie brewery. And now Meantime, whose tipples include Coffee Porter, Chocolate and Raspberry beers and Pale Ale, is showing off. The southeast London beer company is hosting its own BrewFest, taking place in the luscious grounds at the Royal Naval College (should be perfect weekend weather for drinking beer outside, too).
There will be scene-appropriate jazz-heavy tuneage on the turntables each afternoon, food/beer pairing tips and morning talks on European and American craft beers and brewing. Most importantly, there will be curated selection of more than 100 beers to taste across three main bars from London, America and Europe.
Meantime’s BrewFest is on 3-4 August at The Old Brewery, in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, from 12pm – 10pm each day. Tickets cost £15 on the door (with top-up tokens available). @meantimebrewing
