This Summer popular streetfood market Pop Brixton are hoping to transform an empty adjacent plot of land into a focal point for sports and fitness in Lambeth.
Pop Fields (geddit?) has been devised to offer residents a place to celebrate the numerous sporting highlights taking place this year, from the Rio Olympics and European Football Championships to Wimbledon and the Tour De France.
The aim is a facility for use by local schools, sporting academies and community groups, helping to champion Lambeth’s sporting talent, and engage new locals in fitness and physical activity.
So it will offer free use of a multi-purpose playing field, outdoor space and viewing platforms, inviting schools and groups to host sports days, tournaments, exercise classes and public events.
And what’s more, the site will become an open venue for viewing major worldwide events throughout the summer. As well as being shown on the big screen, all manner of summer food and drink will be provided by Pop Brixton’s community of traders, Brixton Brewery, the independent brewery based just 300 metres from the site, and a local pub (name TBC).
But first, a consultation: wports groups, schools, potential partners and local people are invited to attend a series of workshop events starting next week, 13th April, to see how they can get involved with the project and utilise the space. We reckon it’s worth a punt if you’re the competitive type.
