Pedlars’ Guide to the Great Outdoors (Square Peg, £16.99) is a beautifully illustrated and immensely practical hardback book. But we have to come clean: we’re biased, as Below the River’s editor, Kate, worked on the book with its authors, Charlie and Caroline Gladstone, editing and co-writing it. The book, which is reissued this month, is stuffed with ideas for making more of a weekend break in the countryside – or even giving a day in the city a rural twist. There are tips on identifying trees, building rafts with the kids (or big kids), wonderful rural walks, foraging and gourmet campfire cooking: all an urbanite rookie could need to grapple with the great outdoors in style.
