Ooh, we like the sound of this. Wrap up warm, people, as a good-sized portion of SE11 is about to freeze over for the inaugural Ice Skate Vauxhall.
From November 21, visitors to the Pleasure Gardens are promised the thrill of a whopping 600 square metre urban rink. And no doubt it’ll also be a hit for boozed-up daytime revellers falling out of the nearby (and quite legendary) Vauxhall Tavern. Ahem.
Non-skaters will be able to join in with the fun with what’s been billed as London’s first Christmas maze, a chance to negotiate a kilometre of fir tree-lined dark alleys lit by fairy lights.
Yikes. And providing you make it back out, you’ll land in a suitably rowdy festive atmosphere packed with street entertainers and trad rides for the ankle-biters. A craft market will showcase stalls selling gifty bits and pieces, from handmade craft and art treasures to home wares.
It goes without saying that the park will be dripping with food and drink options: a cabin is to serve hot chocolate, mulled wine and a range of craft beers and ciders. Street food includes the London Bus Company, a Vauxhall-based Routemaster dishing up traditional fish and chips.
Late risers might enjoy a “Skate Brunch” each weekend (10am – 1pm) too. But hold off on that fry-up if you’re suffering from a little seasonal excess – and nonetheless intend to take steadfastly to the rink.
