Local husband and wife DJ duo Chris Ellis and Cyndi Anafo – aka the Hands On Family – have been appointed by the new owners of Brixton Village and Market Row to install the first curated music programme for the market as a whole in Brixton Village’s 81-year history.
Chris and Cyndi have been DJing and promoting independent black music in London for nearly 20 years having co-founded the Brixton Village-based lifestyle store United80 and later created a pop-up bar in the market called Snugg, where they curated performances from local and international artists and DJs. So it’s no surprise they’re now driving this month’s upcoming live-music shows.
November’s line-up will also see the launch of Ram Jam Revival, a monthly Sunday afternoon homage to the famous club of the same name. (For the uninitiated, The Ram Jam Club first opened on the Brixton High Road in 1966 and hosted some of the UK’s most celebrated black music acts of the 1960s, as well as US blues and soul artists including Otis Redding, The Yardbirds and Nina Simone.) NOVEMBER LINE-UP AT BRIXTON VILLAGE
14 November (7pm – 10:30pm) at Champagne & Fromage – FRENCH MAMA: Beats, Bubbles & Raclette. Mix fizz with gooey raclette at Champagne & Fromage, as special guest DJ French Mama lays down some delicious grooves.
16 November (7pm – 10:30pm) – AUNTIE MAUREEN: Auntie Maureen turns up with a diverse playlist full of positive discrimination as well as wild abandon. Her trusted 1930s wind-up gramophone is her preferred life-long companion. So beware, as she descends with her picnic turntable, dressed to the vintage nines, to entertain.
16 November (7pm – 10:30pm) at Supercute – TY: Brixton born and raised Mercury prize nominated rapper Ty will be DJing some of his favourite tunes at Supercute, 5th Avenue.
17 November (7pm – 10:30pm) – COLECTIVO FUTURO: Miguel and Oliver DJ an eclectic selection music for and from the soul.
23 November (7pm – 10:30pm) – DJ LINX: Born and bred local and longtime member of the internationally loved Brixton Cycles, DJ Linx will be dishing out boogie, house and beyond.
24 November (7pm – 10:30pm) – TOUCHING BASS: Alex Rita and Andwot are the leading lights behind London’s Touching Bass: a movement of London-based soul disciples who hold down a bi-weekly NTS Radio residency, a regular discussion series at Brilliant Corners called Speaking In Sound and a monthly dance (communicated via texting service) among other creative endeavours.
30 November (7pm – 10:30pm) – NOVA & LORSTEN (GO GO SOUND SYSTEM): Bringing you the Friday post working week wind down vinyl vibes. Journeying through soul funk, jazz, disco, boogie and beyond with an eye on past, present and future music.
