A reader just emailed us this photo, taken from a bus window, of Foxton’s on Brixton Road – which has been graffitied. The new branch of the über estate agent’s, which took over the spot previously occupied by Speedy Noodle, has caused quite a stir locally. Many Brixtonites – us included – are wondering what its arrival could mean for the area.
It is hard not to see the gleaming shop frontage and feel a sinking feeling for the galloping price rises and brutal gentrification the property company’s arrival could symbolise. Foxtons first irked many of us when its sales tactics were secretly filmed and broadcast on the BBC in a 2006 episode of the documentary series, Whistleblower.
So we’re not that surprised that its windows have been touched by the spray can – in fact, we’re surprised it’s taken this long (the branch opened earlier this month). Of course we’re not condoning crime, but we were briefly wishing whoever did it had come up with something more subversive and clever than “PIES” – until we discovered it had originally read: “YUPPIES OUT”, before someone deleted the other letters to create this meaningless message. What do you lot think?

Pies means feet in Spanish. May be one of the many local Spanish-speakers ? Not sure what feet would mean in this context any way…
It was what was left after they managed to remove the word ‘yuppies’…! But ‘feet’ gives it a strangely nice surreal twist!
Here’s my photo of the original:
