Pinboard extra: Invite 100 in Lewisham

Lewisham arthouse eventLewisham locals: could the people who lived in your house 100 years ago be in this photograph? In short, yes. And today, you could find out who they were.

invite100_sketchI N V I T E 100 is a fascinating exhibition and project happening tomorrow –  Saturday 6 April – in the Lewisham Arthouse Grade II listed building. Why? Well back in 1913 the building was brand new and, on this day back then, was celebrating its opening – as Deptford Central Library. In that era, the concept of a library open to everyone was pretty progressive. In keeping with the ethos of this new institution, local residents were invited along to watch the laying of the foundation stone – on Saturday 5 April in 1913.

Over 70 people RSVPed, in letter form of course, to accept or decline their invitations. And Lewisham Arthouse is now inviting today’s inhabitants of the same addresses that attended the ceremony to view copies of the letters and archival material.

You don’t need to be one of the residents to attend – all are welcome, and the event, which is free, starts at 4.30pm (doors 4.15pm).
