5. Camberwell and Greenwich: two new exhibitions
We’ve only recently discovered the brilliant Ben Oakley Gallery in Greenwich – and we love the eponymous owner’s taste. And the new double exhibition, with works by David Bray and Mark Powell, which opens tonight and runs until the end of the month, doesn’t disappoint.
Ben emailed – concisely – to tell us about the artists: “One uses a Bic Biro the other a fine point pen with amazing results that’ll blow your mind”. We’d better check it out then.
We also fancy the one-night only live event at one of our favourite art spaces below the river, the South London Gallery.
On Saturday, the gallery hosts Mountain, the UK première of a live performance by Irish artist Orla Barry, who examines the idea that “every sentence we utter is improvisation”. Barry’s The Scavenger’s Daughters was presented at Tate Modern in 2009, and in this new piece the artist has chosen 36 words, which appear on a wheel of fortune: when the wheel stops on a word, it this prompts an improvised scenario which unfold using speech, monologue, interview and poem. The show is supported by Culture Ireland and co-funded by the European Union. You can get a taster in this filmed clip.
